Generation One
1. Francis1 BUDLONG; born circa 1641 at France?; married Rebecca Lippitt, daughter of John Lippitt Sr. and ? (--?--), 19 March 1668/69 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died November 1675 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI; buried after November 1675 at Brayton Cemetery, Warwick (Apponaug), Kent Co., RI.
Despite years of research into the life and death of Francis Budlong, there remain many unanswered questions. His parentage and place of birth are unknown. His life in the Colony of Rhode Island is chronicled by only four brief notations in the records of the Town of Warwick. The location of his homestead is a mystery, and his apparent death at the hands of Indians is not documented. Indeed, there is little to define his existence except for the family stories handed down through the generations and a few entries by Old Warwick's town clerks. However, even with just this much information, it is possible to piece together his story and gain at least some insight into the life and death of Francis Budlong.
Francis Budlong, progenitor of all the Budlongs in the United States and Canada, was apparently the first and only person bearing that surname to settle in the New World. The earliest known reference to him occurs in the Warwick town records in which his marriage to Rebecca Lippitt was entered on 19 March 1668/69. Nothing is known of his life prior to that date save for information gleaned from various family legends. These stories state that he was a member of a French Huguenot family which left France due to religious persecution, and that he made his way from England to the New World and settled in Warwick, Rhode Island. Huguenots [pronounced HU-ghe-nots] were French Protestants of the 16th and 17th centuries who opposed French Catholics. The Edict of Nantes of 1598 gave the Huguenots religious freedom and helped them gain social and political power; however, they lost this control following the war of 1625-1628, during which time Cardinal Richelieu sought to destroy them. When King Louis XIV took away their religious freedom in 1685 by revoking the Edict of Nantes, many Huguenots left France. It wasn't until 1787, during the reign of King Louis XVI, that the Huguenots regained their freedom. Throughout all these years of religious and political strife, many Huguenots travelled to England and, later, America seeking religious freedom.
It is not known whether Francis Budlong was born in France and, as a grown man, sought refuge in England to escape religious persecution. He may have been taken by his parents to England when he was still a child. Or he may have been born in England, a descendant of Huguenots who had left France during the very early years of Huguenot persecution. Research into the English records has so far yielded no clues, and efforts have been hampered by the apparent anglicization of his original French surname. As political and religious refugees adopted new countries, their names were often modified in everyday speech as well as civil and religious records. So it probably was with the Huguenots immigrating to England and the New World in the seventeenth century. There are several French names from which the name Budlong may have derived: Bourdillon, Boutelonge, Budillon, Budlon, Butlin, Butling, and Butlong. Bourdillon is reputed to be a prominent French family's name that, "... when pronounced by the Anglo-Saxon tongue, soon became corrupted orthographically and phonically to Budillon, Butlin, Butling, and finally Budlong" (Cyclopedia of American Biography). The following coat of arms is registered under the name Bourdillon: "Geneve. D'or au croiss. de gu., acc. de quatre etoiles de sa., 3 rangees en chef et 1 en p." A rough translation is "a red crescent on a field of gold, with four black stars, three above and one below" (Rietstap, I). The name Boutelogne, according to a Parisian lawyer who spoke with descendant Herbert Budlong, is an old French name still found in Paris, and means "long thrust" as with a spear. No coat of arms could be found for that name. It should also be mentioned that many French soldiers or sailors of the day were given "dit" names; e.g., Jacques Payan dit [called] Saintonge. Jacques' original surname was Payan, but his fellow soldiers called him Jacques Saintonge because that is the province in which he was born. Other "dit" names derived from one's occupation, physical characteristics, temperament, etc. In many cases, these names replaced the original surname. Thus, if Francis Budlong were a soldier or sailor, his original name might have been, for example, François Piché. His fellow soldiers might have called him François Boulogne because he came from Boulogne Province, and François may very well have retained that surname, later Anglicized to "Budlong." Whatever his original name or early life, at some point Francis Budlong made his way to the New World.
There are no records to show when or how Francis Budlong immigrated to the New World. He may have journeyed to the New England colonies alone or he may have travelled in the company of friends or family. He might have been a sailor who decided to settle down in Rhode Island after a few years at sea. Or perhaps he apprenticed himself to a craftsman heading for the colonies, indenturing himself for a number of years in order to finance his way to the New World and a new life. Nothing is certain except that Francis Budlong had arrived in the New World, specifically the town of Warwick in the Colony of Rhode Island, by the time of his marriage on 19 March 1668/69 to Rebecca Lippitt. She was the widow of Joseph Howard and the daughter of John Lippitt, a prominent member of the Warwick community.
On 30 April 1672, Francis Budlong became a freeman; that is, he owned property in Warwick and the citizens of the town consented to his becoming a voting citizen and participating in its government. Along with other Warwick freemen, he defended his ownership of the Warwick lands ... on 15 June 1672, "he was one of townsmen pledged to stand together against the intrusions of Connecticut and to send an agent to England praying relief therefrom." In 1674, he was a juryman for the town.
During these years Francis Budlong made a living and supported himself and his family, yet how he accomplished this is unknown. He may have been a farmer and husbandman, an innkeeper, or a craftsman. There were many roles to play in the community and each inhabitant could find his own niche. The town of Warwick boasted a fair range of talent and skill in those days. Samuel Gorton, founder of what was then known as Shawomet, was the people's spiritual and political leader. John Greene was known for his legal and business skills. Luke Bromley, Matthias Harvey, Samuel Stafford, Thomas Stafford, and John Sweet all served as town millers throughout those early years. Peter Busecot was a blacksmith and John Smith was a mason. William Burton, Richard Carder, John Greene, Richard Harcut, Henry Knowles, Anthony Lowe, Robert Potter, Thomas Stafford, and Stukely Westcott were all part-time innkeepers. Nearby Pawtuxet had Thomas Smith, a tailor, and William Field, a tanner. Unfortunately, there are no records to specify what part Francis Budlong played in his community; it is known only that he owned land there and apparently dutifully supported his family.
Francis Budlong undoubtedly lived in Old Warwick, but where was his homestead? Again, there is no definitive answer, although there are several areas which could be considered likely places for the Budlong family to have made their home. The first possibility is the land that had previously belonged to Joseph Howard, the first husband of Rebecca Lippitt. Joseph Howard married Rebecca Lippitt on 2 February 1665 and died sometime before 1668. It is possible that Joseph's homelot was inherited by his widow and that she and her second husband, Francis Budlong, resided there.
There are several clues in the town records that help pinpoint the location of Joseph's homelot. On 18 May 1663 Joseph Howard, William Eaton, and Thomas Hedger were "proposed to ye Towne by the Counsell to bee receaved in to ye Towne as foloweth to heave each of them twelve akers of Land for buildinge and for meddow and not to exceed with each of them Commonidge provided they build upon some part of ye sayd Land acordinge to former Order and maintaine or els forfite ye Common." Several months later, just prior to his marriage to Rebecca Lippitt, the town records note: "January ye 27th 1664 Laid out to Joseph howard twelve ackers of Land moor or lese bounding northerly one Captaine John Greens land easterly upon ye sea westerly by ye hyghway leading to Captaine John Greens land one ye southerly sid of ocupatuxet cove & southerly by ye common." Captain Greene owned so much land on the southern side of Occupasstuxet Cove that it is very difficult to ascertain where Joseph Howard's land might have been. However, a later entry in the town records states that it was "voated that John Lippett Junior be Added to ye bridge neer Jams Sweets house And that ye said bridge be forth with mended at ye discresion of ye surveyors with one Crose tresle at ye least And that William Eaton Joseph Howard & Thomas Hedger be also Added to ye said bridge for the present And to worke ther att when ye Surveyors warne them to mend ye same." This entry implies that the men were probably neighbors and lived near a brook or river. The town records also note a transfer of property from Thomas Hedger, one of the above neighbors, to fellow townsman Edward Marshall. In this document Hedger states that he is disposing of "all my land granted unto mee by ye Towne of warwick vidisalesit twelve akers all ready Layd out beeing bounded eastward upon Mr Samuell Gortones lott westward by a way to ye Litell pond northward by part of Mr Smithes Lott and part by ye Common southward fronting on ye Comon." It is known that Samuel Gorton resided at Warwick Neck, in the vicinity of what is now the intersection of Samuel Gorton Avenue and Warwick Neck Avenue; and an old map of the area shows a brook running east to west into Warwick Cove. Using all these clues, one can reasonably assume that Joseph Howard's land may have been on the northeast portion of Warwick Neck, probably in what is now the Longmeadow area. Interestingly, on 20 May 1693 Francis Budlong's son, John, deeded to Moses Lippitt, the uncle who raised him, twelve acres in Warwick. These twelve acres could represent the original homelot that Joseph Howard purchased from the town back in 1664.
It is also possible that Francis Budlong had purchased his own land and established a farm by the time he proposed marriage to the Widow Howard. Unfortunately, the records state only that by 1672 Francis Budlong was a landowner. They do not specify whether he purchased the property himself or received it as part of his wife's dowry. If he purchased the property himself, where was it? A Budlong descendant who compiled his family's genealogy noted, "The home of this family was in Old Warwick, R.I. at what is now known as Horse Neck." Horse Neck is situated between Warwick Neck on the east and Brush Neck on the west. Since he may have had access to verbal or written information not available today, this piece of information regarding the possible location of the Budlong homestead must not be discounted.
Another possibility for the location of the original Budlong homestead is the Brush Neck section of Warwick, the westernmost neck of the three, on the western shore of Brush Neck Cove. It is known that Francis Budlong's son, John, built his home and established Budlong Farm on the southern end of Buttonwoods Avenue at Brush Neck. It is possible that his house, which survives to this day, was built on the site of his father's homestead. It is even possible that when Francis Budlong's house was burned to the ground by Indians in 1675, the great stone chimney of his stone-ender was still standing and may have been used by his son in building his own house. It might be that the land which John Budlong farmed was the same land that Francis Budlong worked for the few short years of his married life.
In early New England, family cemeteries were usually located on the homestead property, and several generations of a family were often buried in the same burial ground. Therefore, if Francis Budlong's gravesite were found, it could be assumed that the land on which he was buried was the same land on which he lived. The Budlong Farm burial ground at Brush Neck provides fuel for speculation.
It has been recorded that John Budlong, son of Francis, was "buried on his farm." It is known through John's will that his son, John Budlong Jr., a third-generation Budlong, inherited Budlong Farm. It is also known that John Budlong Jr. is buried at Historical Cemetery #74 on Houston Drive. A dark slate gravestone is still standing there, adorned with the "winged head" typical of the period and engraved with his name and date of death. The land on which the cemetery is located was once part of Budlong Farm; indeed, one can see the old farmhouse through the trees and houses of the neighborhood. Also buried at that cemetery are many other Budlong family members, their spouses, and their children; all are of the third generation or later. Except for one empty area in the southwest corner of the lot, the cemetery is full of Budlongs and their gravestones. Obviously, this is a Budlong family burial ground; but when was it established? John Budlong Jr. may have been the first of his family to be buried at Historical Cemetery #74. However, it makes more sense that John Budlong Jr. was buried in a cemetery already established as a family burial ground by the previous generation. If that is the case, then John Budlong Jr. was buried alongside his parents, and perhaps even his grandparents. If there are first and second generation Budlongs in that cemetery, why are there no markers for the graves? The gravestones may have been destroyed by time and the elements, or even by vandals. The cemetery today is in a bad state, overgrown with poison ivy and bramble bushes and littered with neighborhood trash. Several years ago a study conducted by the Director of Veterans' Cemeteries in Rhode Island described the cemetery's condition as "poor." And as early as 1891 local historian James Newell Arnold noted that the cemetery was "neglected." It has been well over three hundred years since the death of Francis Budlong; acid rain, freezing cold, and neglect has caused much damage over the years. Abuse and destruction by vandals have also have been factors. The John Budlong Jr. gravestone mentioned above is marred by black spray paint and can be read only by doing a gravestone rubbing. A neighbor in an adjoining lot deems it acceptable to store engine parts and other trash on the gravestones near his property line. Another neighbor chooses to use the rear section of the cemetery as a large compost heap for his leaves and brush. That rear section, the area in the southwest corner noted above as "empty," might have contained first and second generation gravestones at one time. These gravestones may very well have been covered by refuse or destroyed by carelessness. If gravestones for Francis Budlong and his wife Rebecca were found at Historical Cemetery #74, it could be assumed that their homestead was nearby. The mystery of where these first-generation Budlongs made their home might then be solved. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that they are indeed buried there. Still, one final tantalizing clue appears in an old family genealogy. It states that John Budlong III, a fourth-generation Budlong, inherited "the lands at Brush Neck" just east of Budlong Farm and that he established Brush Neck Farm there. It also states that he established a family cemetery on his property at Goose Pasture, and that this cemetery was "the second family burial ground." This statement would seem to indicate that Historical Cemetery #74 was, up to that point, the only Budlong family cemetery. If so, one can then speculate that Francis and Rebecca Budlong were the first Budlongs laid to rest at Historical Cemetery #74 and that the original Budlong homestead may have been located in that area. Wherever they may have lived, Francis Budlong and his wife started a family. They "had John, and other ch.[ildren] bef.[ore] or after, or both." Except for general references to "all the family," sources do not mention the number of Budlong children, their names, or their ages. The only child for whom there are records is John Budlong, born about 1671.
Life in the New World was not easy and Francis Budlong undoubtedly worked hard during those years. He had to struggle against the harsh New England weather, the threat of accident and disease, and intrusive colonial neighbors who wanted his land. In the end, however, it was the natives of the region who inflicted the greatest injury. In November of 1675, following a summer of bloody skirmishes between the Wampanoag Indians and the Massachusetts and Connecticut colonists, a band of Indians attacked the Budlong homestead. On that terrible day, Francis Budlong "was killed by the Indians, with all his family except his son John." The details of the attack remain a mystery. One source states that all the children, not just John, were carried away by the Indians that terrible day. "The legend has been handed down in the family from one generation to another... The custody of the children had been entrusted to an old squaw. This fact being discovered by John's mother's people, they set about getting their release when the battle was raging some distance away. Only John, however, was saved and his rescue was obtained by bribing the old squaw with a big red pumpkin. This was the price of the liberty of John, then a child of three years." Another source states that young John was saved by a friendly squaw who hid him in a Dutch oven during the raid, and that he was later traded to his uncle for a load of pumpkins. Whether the other children were killed outright that day or kidnapped, young John Budlong was the sole survivor of the massacre of the Budlong family. He was carried away by the Indians and was returned, ostensibly in a gesture of goodwill, several weeks later. As one historian notes, "January 5th, the Indians sent in a captive child, three or four years of age, belonging at Warwick."
Even Francis Budlong's death, the final event of his life, is shrouded in mystery. Detailed accounts of King Philip's War, compiled from soldiers' jounals and military records, chronicle events of the war in a day by day fashion. Yet none of these records mentions the massacre of the Budlong family at Warwick, Rhode Island. No accounts of King Philip's War mentions an Indian attack anywhere in the colony of Rhode Island in November of 1675. Yet several other sources note November 1675 as the date of the Budlong family massacre. One even states that, on the day the Budlongs were killed, "the battle was raging some distance away." Some credence is given to the November 1675 date through the story of John Wickes, a tanner and fellow resident of the Budlongs at Warwick. Wickes also is listed as having been killed by Indians in November of 1675. "On the approach of danger, when garrisons had been provided and the inhabitants generally had repaired to them, he could not be persuaded that he required any protection against the natives. From his past experience of their uniform kindness and goodwill towards him personally, he was slow to believe himself in danger, and to the oft-repeated admonitions of his friends to be more careful of his safety. His answer was that he had no fears of injury from the Indians - that they would not hurt him. With this mistaken confidence in their fidelity, he ventured beyond the protection of the garrisons; and going at evening into the woods in search of his cows, he did not return. His fate was first known to his friends on seeing his head set upon a pole near his own dwelling on the following morning. This they immediately - and before venturing in search of the body - buried near the stone garrison and with a few rods of it. The body, which was found on the succeeding day, was interred beside the head, but in a distinct grave; and two little hillocks which mark the spot are still shown as the grave of John Wickes." John Wickes' grave is still visible at Warwick Historical Cemetery #28 on West Shore Road.
Note the statement above that "the inhabitants generally" had retreated to the safety of the garrison houses. It could be that the Budlong family, thinking themselves on good terms with the local Indians, failed to seek safety in a nearby garrison house. Perhaps, like the ill-fated John Wickes, they failed to exercise proper caution. Unfortunately, Francis and Rebecca Budlong paid for that mistake with their lives.
There are many questions still remaining about the first Budlong family in America. Although we can speculate, we will probably never know for certain where Francis Budlong came from, where he lived, how he died, and where he was buried. One thing, however, is certain ... Francis' young son somehow survived an Indian massacre of his family and began anew the Budlong family in the New World. He immigrated before 19 March 1669 to Warwick, Kent Co., RI. He was admitted a Freeman on 30 April 1672 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. He was noted in the records on 15 June 1672 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. He was appointed a Juryman in 1674 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI.
Rebecca LIPPITT married Joseph Howard on 2 February 1664/65 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. She was born circa 1647?. She died in November 1675 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. She was buried after November 1675 at Brayton Cemetery, Warwick (Apponaug), Kent Co., RI.
Children of Francis1 Budlong and Rebecca Lippitt were:
Generation Two
2. John2 BUDLONG Sr. (Francis1); born circa 1672 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI; married Isabel Potter(R), daughter of John Potter(R) Sr. and Ruth Fisher, 1697 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died 4 October 1744 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI.
He was a Farmer. John Budlong was about three years old when King Philip's War of 1675-76 was raging across New England. In November of 1675 Indians attacked his family's homestead and killed his parents. Young John was carried off into the woods surrounding Shawomet by the natives. What happened to him during the next few weeks is unknown; but, as stated in Soldiers in King Philip's War, on 5 January 1676 "the Indians sent in a captive child, three or four years of age, belonging at Warwick." John's return followed the Great Swamp Massacre of 19 December in which the Narragansett tribe was all but wiped out. His return might have been a conciliatory gesture on the part of the remaining Narragansetts. However, an entry in an old journal kept by Frank Clifford Potter offers the following version: "A curious story is told of John's rescue. The legend has been handed down in the family from one generation to another, and some old relics recently discovered tend to substantiate its authenticity. The custody of the children had been entrusted to an old squaw. This fact being discovered by John's mother's people, they set about getting their release when the battle was raging some distance away. Only John, however, was saved and his rescue was obtained by bribing the old squaw with a big red pumpkin. This was the price of the liberty of John, then a child of three years." Another family story, related in The Budlong Pioneers, states that young John was saved by a friendly squaw who hid him in a Dutch oven during the raid, and that he was later traded to his uncle, Moses Lippitt, for a load of pumpkins. Whether Indian pride or English pumpkins was the price of his freedom, the boy was returned to Old Warwick and brought to the home of his maternal uncle, Moses Lippitt.
John Budlong was undoubtedly very busy in the following years, supporting a family of six children and working his farm; yet the records show nothing extraordinary. He and his wife were mentioned in a pre-1712 letter from Dinah Wilke to Captain James Greene Jr. and his wife, Mary, neighbors of the Budlongs. On 11 November 1715, John bought a six- acre lot in Warwick for 30£ from Ephraim and Hannah Pierce, grandparents of his son-in- law. On 18 October 1720 he and his wife witnessed the will of Mary Greene, widow of Captain Greene. On 26 January 1722, "he and his wife were given legacy of 14s., by will of Isabel Burton of this date" (Austin 1887, 264). Isabel was the aunt of John Budlong's wife. In 1734, the following was noted in the town records: "The Earmark of John Budlong is a hind Gad [notch] in ye left ear and slit ye under side ye same and a fork in the Right entred the 14th of November 1734 and hath had ye same mark upwards of thirty years past ... James Jerauld Clk" (Chapin, 17).
John Budlong made his will on 4 October 1731 and appointed his son, John Jr., executor. It states: "To eldest daughter Rebecca Pearce, L5, and what she had. To second daughter Mary Pearce, L60. To youngest daughter Isabel Budlong, a feather bed, &c., to value of L35, also L15 cash and L50, at end of 2 years. To son Moses, 70 acres and L300. To son Daniel, 2 lots of land and L300, at age. To eldest son John, all the rest both real and personal, housing, goods, &c. Inventory,L760, 18s., 6d., viz: notes, bonds, &c. " (Austin 1887, 264).
John died on 4 October 1744 around the age of seventy-three and was buried "on his farm" (Austin 1887, 264). His will was proved on 17 December 1744.*. John Budlong Sr. was adopted by Moses Lippitt Sr. circa 5 January 1676. John Budlong Sr. acquired property in 1692 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Moses Lippitt Sr. acquired property from John Budlong Sr. on 20 May 1693 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. He was admitted a Freeman on 28 April 1696 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. John Budlong Sr. acquired property from Ephraim Pierce on 11 November 1715 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI.
Isabel POTTER(R) was born on 17 October 1674 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI. She died before 4 October 1731 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI.
Children of John2 Budlong Sr. and Isabel Potter(R) were as follows:
Isabel received in her father's will "a feather bed, &c., to value of L35, also L15 cash and L50, at end of two years."
Generation Three
3. John3 BUDLONG Jr. (John2, Francis1); born 1698 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI; married Tabitha Pearce, daughter of Azrikim Pearce Sr. and Elizabeth Esten, 8 January 1729/30 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI; married Renew (Briggs) Moon 1749; died 24 January 1763.
Executor of his father's will, by which he received his father's house and a large portion of the Budlong lands; his livelihood consisted of farming and sheep-raising; in 1724, was made a Freeman; in 1744, he and others of the Church of Old Warwick were given leave to establish a church at the fulling mill in Apponaug - Warwick, RI (see section entitled "The Establishment of Warwick, RI" in this volume); "At a church meeting held in old Warwick, R.I., of which Elder Manassah Martin was pastor, Dec. 6, 1744, Benjamin Pierce and wife, Ezrikham Pierce and wife, Edward Case and wife, John Budlong and such others as wished to form a church at the Fulling mill, of the same faith and order, were granted leave. Several members from East Greenwich united with them, and the church was duly organized; Benjamin Pierce was ordained their minister. They eventually erected a meeting-house on an eminence east of the village of Apponaug, which commanded an extensive prospect of this village, river, islands, and surrounding country ... The church became involved in difficulty owing to some change in the religious sentiments of Elder Pierce, and diminished in numbers, and was finally dissolved, and 'their meeting-house went to decay for many years.' At what precise period this occurred does not appear, but it was previous to the Revolutionary war" (Pierce Genealogy, pp. 55, 56); it is evident from his will that he was a successful farmer and landholder; his will was made 1-16-1763, proved 3-14-1763, and reads: "To son John, all lands at Brush Neck, Warwick. To son Nathan, house and land where my son John lives. To son Pearce Budlong, land at Rocky Hill, Warwick. To sons William and James, three lots of land adjoining homestead, and rights at Otter Creek. To son John, daughter Isabel Greene, son Nathan, daughter Sarah Budlong, sons Pearce, William, James, daughter Tabitha and sons Joseph, Benjamin and Stephen, all the rest of personal estate. Inventory, L14,269, 11s., 6d., viz: 15 Spanish milled dollars, 3 1/2 pistareens, and 1 English shilling (in Old Tenor) L108, 12s., wearing apparel L213, cash in Old Tenor and lawful money computed in Old Tenor (at the rate of 18 1/3 for 1), L251, 6s., bonds and notes L6,447, 17s., 6d., pewter, 6 large silver spoons, linen wheel, 2 churns, cider barrels, eel spear, 1,100 lb. tobacco, large bible, &c., a black mare, bull, pair of oxen, pair of steers, 8 heifers, 2 yearlings, 3 calves, 9 cows, 47 sheep, 9 shoats [young hogs], 18 fowls, &c." (Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, p. 265); executor of his will was son John; buried at Historical Cemetery #74 in Warwick, RI; dark stone headstone has winged head at top.
Tabitha PEARCE. Tabitha resided in Warwick, RI. She was buried at Historical Cemetery #74 in Warwick, RI. She was born on 27 August 1717. She died in 1746 at Warwick, Kent Co., RI.
Children of John3 Budlong Jr. and Tabitha Pearce were as follows:
Children of John3 Budlong Jr. and Renew (Briggs) Moon were:

Elder Benjamin PEARCE Sr. Benjamin resided in Warwick, RI. "At a church meeting held in old Warwick, R.I., of which Elder Manassah Martin was pastor, Dec. The church became involved in difficulty owing to some change in the religious sentiments of Elder Pierce, and diminished in numbers, and was finally dissolved, and 'their meeting-house went to decay for many years.' At what precise period this occurred does not appear, but it was previous to the Revolutionary war." He died before 1763.
